Financial Managers or Controllers work in hospitals or other health care institution’s and are responsible for the organization’s finances. This professional directs the preparation of budgets, the maintenance of the institution’s statistical records, and the preparation of a variety of financial reports. The controller is usually assisted by one or more accountants and/or accounting clerks. In a hospital, the business office and the admitting office usually fall under the administrative supervision of the controller. If the billing system is controlled by computer, there may be a separate data processing department whose manager might also report to the controller.
The Controller position requires a baccalaureate degree in business. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) status and master’s degrees are preferred by many employers. Education requirements for other accounting positions in the hospital range form accounting degrees to business school training.
