The supervisory role provided by the Medical Staff Coordinator is vital to the proper functioning of the hospital staff. This health professional provides administrative assistance in the coordination of medical staff activities. The Medical Staff Coordinator acts as a liaison between the medical staff, nursing staff and administration, in addition to supervising the credentialing process of new applicants and reappointments to the medical staff. They may also be responsible for revising medical staff bylaws, working with Chief of Staff in preparing agendas, and taking minutes and follow-up on results of medical staff committees. Often the Medical Staff Coordinator makes arrangements for periodic medical staff meetings, and handles the distribution of policies, procedures, memorandums, and any pertinent information to members of the medical staff.
Individuals must complete an associate’s degree or the equivalent. Upon program completion, graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) Certification examination.
